Use new java 21 features that simplify the code:

A few larger changes I could try in followup PRs:

  • Use virtual threads for network-IO-heavy areas like the downloader
  • Use the new built-in simple web server to serve a tileset or tileset preview after building

There are also a few "preview" features that aren't fully released in java 21 but would provide major improvements... not sure if I should try using them or wait until they make it to a stable release:

  • Foreign Function & Memory API which would:
    • let us simplify memory-mapped file reads and remove hacks that worked around segments being limited to 4GB and not being able to explicitly unmap a segment
    • let us drop the jnr-ffi dependency and have a more robust way to use native madvise(random) to speed up memory-mapped reads
  • String templates (more of a minor ergonomic enhancer, and potentially streamline sqlite query construction)
  • Vector API (still in incubator) which might help optimizing some CPU hot spots
